Continued from page 3...living and laughing with autism

Thank goodness, my husband and I have a loving, healthy marriage. Both of us always encouraged our daughter to have a good social life outside of the family and we never leaned on her to babysit. We also allowed her to set her own rules with her brother and didn’t interfere with their relationship. She is now a junior in college, on the crew team, and is in an intellectually challenging academic program. Her tag line was: “Saving the the world, dressed in Prada.” Spoiling her a little went a long way. She still feels special and close to us.

Life isn’t perfect, but if you try - and are lucky - you can have a good one.

on the process of a particular carp that swam in the indoor pool  below ours and her table. My son never got too close to her, but he is kind of hard to ignore. She turned to her food in disgust. The next time she raised her head my son was about six inches from her, making the silliest face I’ve seen him do. She exclaimed and almost fell off her chair. My daughter and I had to run to the bathroom while my husband made some insincere apologies.

We all have our own lives; I’ve seen too many families where he entire focus of their existence is on the special child. My husband works for a law firm but spends time on several boards as well, trying to make the world a better place. A 9 to 5 job is out of the question for me, but I’m on a creative path I had to postpone when I became a mom and I’ve never felt so fulfilled.
